
Professor at The University of Oulu
Since 2020, Ulla Haverinen-Shaughnessy has served as a Professor at the University of Oulu, Finland, where she has contributed to both education and research in the areas of Good Indoor Air and Building Health. As a Senior Research Associate and Visiting Professor at the University of Tulsa, she has been involved in studies on indoor air quality (IAQ) in residential buildings and schools since 2006. Additionally, as an Adjunct Professor at Tampere University, she has been engaged in research collaboration since 2007.
From 2007 to 2016, she worked as a Senior Researcher at the National Institute for Health and Welfare, where she led a research group and coordinated projects both in Finland and across the EU. She co-chaired the ISES-ISIAQ 2019 joint conference and has served as a member of the International Scientific Committee for the Indoor Air conferences in 2018, 2020, and 2022, as well as the Healthy Buildings Europe 2017 conference.
Furthermore, she contributed to the development of World Health Organization (WHO) tools for monitoring Parma conference commitments between 2010 and 2015. She also collaborated with WHO on identifying interventions to reduce health effects from dampness and mold, quantifying the burden of housing-related diseases, and developing environmental health information systems to support policy-making between 2007 and 2009. She was awarded a postdoctoral research grant by the Academy of Finland for the period 2005–2008, as well as a Fulbright Research Grant for postdoctoral studies at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, from 2002 to 2004.
